Transport for the South East welcomes the government’s announcement of £316.9 million of investment for transport in the South East over the next four years (2026/27-2029/30), through the new Local Transport Grant.
TfSE’s draft Transport Strategy highlights how important multi-year funding is in giving local authorities the long-term funding they need to plan with more certainty. This means councils can now make bigger, more ambitious plans instead of working year to year.
For the South East, this will support:
- Better public transport options including improved infrastructure and more efficient vehicles
- Smoother journeys by tackling congestion
- Safer streets for walking and cycling
- Improved accessibility so more people can get around easily
While resource funding for planning and service provision will remain at the same level over the next three years, the four-year capital funding allocation for infrastructure and projects will rise, creating welcome stability so councils can plan more effectively for the longer term.
This funding announcement is a big step forward. With the right plans in place, our local authorities can use this opportunity to deliver improvements that make travel easier, greener and safer for millions of people across the South East.
Our role at TfSE is to work with local authorities to champion the South East, and we’ll continue to make the case to government for sustained investment in our region – one of the UK’s most important economic powerhouses and central to national growth ambitions.
