Regional Travel Survey Privacy Policy

Overview 

This privacy notice applies to Transport for the South East Regional Travel Survey.  

Transport for the South East (hosted by East Sussex county council, is a Sub-national Transport Body (STB) representing 16 local transport authorities (LTAs) within the South East of England. To better understand travel patterns within our geography we are undertaking a Regional Travel Survey. By agreeing to the terms of this privacy notice you are giving consent for us to process some personally identifiable data; home post code, age, gender, income, ethnic origin and disability status. The data collected will be used by us for transport modelling. We will not be publishing any of the raw data, however aggregated analysis may be shared. Anonymised aggregated data will be shared with and our local transport authorities for use in their own local transport models.

Who are we? 

Transport for the South East is the Sub-national Transport Body (STB) for the South East of England. We are a partnership bringing together local authorities, business groups and others to make the case for investment in our region’s strategic transport networks and infrastructure. 

What type of information is collected from you? 

Information collected is to be used as an input to data models, and to understand attitudes towards different transport modes from different personas, we will be collecting journey origin and destination postcodes, disability status, ethnic origin, income, age band and gender.  

How is your information used? 

This data will be used as input data for a range of regional transport planning models. 

Transport for the South East will not process your information outside of the European Economic Area. Please note that your data will be collected by YouGov. What is the legal basis for processing your information? 

The legal basis for gathering personal data is Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR – consent. 

The legal basis for gathering special category date is Article 9 (1)(a) of the GDPR – Explicit consent.

How long will your information be kept for? 

This data will be kept until the end of the 2027/28 financial year for use in data models. After this point the data will be anonymised by aggregating up to Lower Super Output Area. 

Sharing your information 

Anonymised data will be shared with Local authority partners to be used in local transport models. 

Any sharing of personal data is always done: 

  • on a case-by-case basis; 
  • using the minimum personal data necessary; 
  • with the appropriate security controls in place; and 
  • in line with legislation. 

Information is only shared with those agencies and bodies who have a “need to know” or where you have consented to the sharing of your personal data to such persons. 

We may use the information we hold about you to assist in the detection and prevention of crime or fraud. We may also share this information with other bodies that inspect and manage public funds. 

Use of third-party organisations 

The data collection is being completed by YouGov, who have been sub-contracted by the data processor, Steer Davies & Gleave Limited consultancy (steer). Privacy notice for steer can be viewed here. 

Steer are an organisation commissioned by Transport for the South East and are under contractual obligation to comply with data protection legislation. 

Your rights 

Under data protection legislation, you have the right: 

  • to be informed why, where and how we use your information; 
  • to ask for access to your information; 
  • to ask for your information to be corrected if it is inaccurate or incomplete; 
  • to ask for your information to be deleted or removed where there is no need for us to continue processing it; 
  • to ask us to restrict the use of your information; 
  • to ask us to copy or transfer your information from one IT system to another in a safe and secure way, without impacting the quality of the information;
